NEAT Developments is a new London developer with a different approach to housebuilding. Suzie Mayes talks to md Joe Crawley about the company’s schemes and pushing the possibilities

Joe Crawley, MD of NEAT Developments, likes to do things differently. The head of this mixed-use developer, currently with a scheme almost fully sold in Colindale, north London, and another recently approved development in Hendon, sees schemes as products, not mere flats or mews houses. And he wants to challenge some of housebuilding’s traditional modes of operation, looking to other industries for inspiration. “Exciting” is what this London veteran strives for.

Crawley formed NEAT in late 2013 after years of “doing all sorts of things” for more than 20 years – commercial, leisure, residential and mixed-use development. The reoccurring theme was the size of the schemes, at around 80 units. But Crawley grew tired of delivering small-scale spaces, favouring much larger developments. “I’ve delivered so many blocks of flats. With the gestation period of large developments you get to do fewer schemes.”
